THE ROLLING STONE INTERVIEW
In the December 15th 1994 issue of Rolling Stone, Courtney was interviewed by David Fricke. Grant sees this as one of the most interesting interviews he has read so far, as it describes Courtney's mind-set, and reveals what he considers to be a psychopathic personality.

Grant says: "Throughout this interview, Courtney seems preoccupied with convincing everyone how suicidal Kurt was. She tells a story about Kurt bringing a gun to the hospital room when Frances was born and she heroically grabbed the gun from him and said, "I'll go first, I can't have you do it first. I'll go first." This whole story is difficult to believe. I find it interesting that Courtney was so absorbed in promoting the image of Kurt's suicidal tendencies right after his beautiful daughter was born, that she showed no concern at all for the fact that Frances would grow up hearing this horror story once it got published. It certainly wouldn't be the best thing for her self-esteem."

In the same Rolling Stone interview, Fricke raised questions about the "suicide" note . Feeling pressured to explain why the note was confusing and not really suicidal, Courtney admitted Kurt had left her another note!

Grant, understandably, was surprised at this revelation.

During a telephone conversation Audio Clip between Grant and Courtney on January 19th 1995, he asked her about the "other" note. Courtney claimed she found it on her bed under a pillow. Grant says he knows this was not true, because Thursday morning April 7th, well after the time of Kurt's death (experts said Kurt had been dead since April 4th or 5th), he had looked under the pillows during the search of the Lake Washington home. He also looked under the bed and between the mattresses, where he found a package of the drug Rohypnol.

Grant says: I asked her why she didn't tell me about the "other" note when she found it, or even some time later. After all, she had indicated she wanted me to investigate her husband's death. I couldn't understand why she'd withhold such a vital piece of evidence! Courtney said she didn't think it was necessary. Courtney goes on to say "I told Sgt. Cameron about it," she told me. "And I told Rosemary (Carroll) about it." Another obvious lie!

If the police knew about this other note, it would have been listed and evidence and mentioned in the police reports. It wasn't. If Rosemary Carroll had known about it during the first few months after Kurt's death, she would have told Grant, especially since she put her career and relationship with Courtney at risk to provide him with information Audio Clip and evidence.

What Grant believes is more important, is what the second note says. Courtney had admitted to him Audio Clip that it wasn't suicidal. She quoted some lines to Rolling Stone, which said "You know I love you, I love Frances, I'm so sorry. Please don't follow me... I'll be there, I'll protect you. I don't know where I'm going, I just can't be here anymore."

Grant thinks the reason he was never told about the second note, or it wasn't released to the media is because the note found at the scene by the police was simply a retirement letter written to Kurt's fans explaining why he was either leaving the music industry, or disbanding Nirvana to pursue other musical interests (it was known that Kurt and Michael Stipe struck up a friendship and planned on recording some stuff together; Dave Grohl also said Nirvana were about to break up at the time). It wasn't a "suicide" note. Furthermore, the last few lines at the bottom of the "suicide" note appear to have been added by another hand.

The second note Courtney kept in secret, defines the first note found at the scene.

"Kurt was quitting the music business. He was leaving Courtney and he was leaving Seattle. That's all he was doing, and Courtney knew it." Grant says.

Before we move on, lets back up for a second here. On January 6th 1995 (before the final conversations with Courtney on the 19th), Grant appeared on the nationally syndicated Allen Handelman radio show. Courtney heard this show in Seattle and called Grant's office at 4:08AM. She left the following brief message before being cut off: "Hi Tom. This is Courtney... I just heard the radio thing.. I haven't heard you tell an out, ya know, I listened to the thing and I didn't hear you tell, tell like outright lies... I wish you were doing it for the money and the realization that you're doing it because you think it's right hurts me a lot, and you're not, but" (the machine cuts her off) Audio Clip.

About this incident, Grant says: "Courtney did not sound angry on the phone. She actually sounded hurt! Is this the same Courtney Love who has been known to attack, both verbally and physically, nearly everyone who dares cross her? I was aware of how vindictive Courtney could be. Courtney had previously bragged to me about throwing a brick through the window of one of her former "friends". She also told me about how she trashed Trent Reznor's hotel room after he rejected her. And I was with Courtney once when she went ballistic for nearly 30 minutes simply because of her band members politely said she should go down the hall and visit her daughter. Now Courtney listened to me tell an national radio audience that she was involved in the murder of her husband....and she wasn't angry?! I'm a private investigator, not a cop. I cannot enforce the law or prosecute criminals. I have no authority here. My job is to provide accurate and truthful information. Other than that, all I can do, at best, is try to compel the authorities to do their jobs. Courtney knows that, and yet she seems to be unusually respectful, if not fearful of my role in this investigation. I have a really slow fuse, but you can bet that if a friend of family member of mine committed suicide and someone publicly accused me of having him or her murdered, I'd be in that clown's face in about half a second! Then I'd drag the jerk to court and sue him for everything he has... or ever will have! So what's going on here?"
