THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
As the world mourns the sudden death of Kurt Cobain, Tom Grant returns to Seattle on April 13th and stays at a hotel. The following day he returns to the Lake Washington house, where he found Courtney sitting at the dining room table.

There, wearing a "Grunge is Dead" T-shirt, is Wendy O'Connor; Kurt's mother, who tells Grant "I don't know. Something doesn't seem right. Why didn't Dylan look in the greenhouse?".

According to Grant Audio Clip, Courtney looked over Wendy's shoulder at times, seeming to be concerned about their conversation.

In his summary of events, he says: "I told Wendy I'd like to talk to her at length some time in the next few days. She agreed and said she'd like to talk to me too. As Courtney walked back towards us Wendy began walking away. Courtney put her arms around Wendy and kissed her. I noticed Courtney whispering something in Wendy's ear. The rest of the time I was at the house, Wendy seemed cool towards me, almost evasive."

Listen to Tom Grant explain what happened with Wendy in this clip from the Allan Handelman show Audio Clip.

Courtney shows Tom the "suicide" note , which Tom was able to make a copy of on Courtney's fax machine. Courtney gets irritated and gives Grant an "icy stare" as he mentions something about the note and her reading of the note at the memorial Audio Clip that didn't make sense.

Later in the day, they go to the Carnation property Photo that Cobain and Love also owned. Kat Bjelland, of Babes in Toyland, goes along for the ride. Eric Erlandson, Courtney's guitarist, was originally going to go with them, but left alone in his own van after Courtney takes him into another room to talk. "He'll meet us there", Courtney says when Grant brings up the original plan.

During this drive, Courtney begins talking about the "son of a bitch" who gave the story to the Associated Press that said she had overdosed on April 2nd. "I'm going to find out who the hell it was and sue that mother fucker for libel. I can prove I was at the hotel. People saw me there. It was a total lie."

Grant reminds Courtney that she told him that she planted the story herself. "Huh?...Oh" is Courtney's response, as she turns and looks out the window.

Grant thinks Courtney was deliberately delaying their arrival for some reason, by stopping for snacks (twice) and when she couldn't remember which road to take, thus requiring an extra stop for directions from a farmer. Grant later learns that the property had been built recently, and suspects Courtney surly must have been out there several times while the house was under construction, and would surly know how to get there.

From his Summary of events: "Arriving at the Carnation property, I noticed the two houses on the property reflected what I'd already come to know about Kurt and Courtney's individual personalities. One was an old weathered cabin full of well used furniture and bedding. It looked like the home of a person living in poverty! This is where Kurt apparently felt the most comfortable. The other house is a brand new wood sided mansion, vacant and yet to be furnished. This house was an "exhibition" of success and wealth. The two houses are separated by a pond with a newly constructed walking bridge connecting the old to the new."

They all go into the old cabin first to look around. Courtney and Kat go upstairs, while Grant stays downstairs. Grant says Courtney had tried to convince him that Kurt had been there, after he returned to Seattle from Exodus in Los Angeles. However, everything in the cabin was covered with a very thin layer of moss, due the humid weather. The presence of moss indicates no one had disturbed anything in the cabin for quite some time.

Courtney and Kat eventually come back downstairs. Courtney pulls a cloth pouch from her coat pocket, which revealed a syringe inside. "Look Tom. Kurt was here" she says. Grant doubts it. Why would he leave a syringe there? Also the moss indicated no one had been there.

As they continued looking around the old cabin, Grant says Kat suddenly screamed. Courtney and Grant run to find her in the bathroom looking into the toilet, where five dead rats inside. It looked like they'd been there for quite some time. Now it was obvious no one had used this cabin recently. Grant suspects Courtney brought the pouch containing the syringe with her.

They go into the new house, and find a sleeping bag, cigarette butts and soda cans scattered around. Courtney asks that these items be gathered up to take back and get fingerprinted.

Grant notes that Eric Erlandson didn't show up at the property while they were there, and wonders if he had come and gone before they arrived.

From his summary of events: "We left the Carnation property and headed back to the Lake Washington house. During the drive back Courtney told Kat and I that she was going to make a rubber hand from a cast she'd made of Kurt's hand. She said she was going to use it to slap people in the face and say, "There! That's from Kurt!" I mentioned I'd worked with hand casts and told her fingerprints could even duplicated using a silicon material to fill the mold. Courtney appeared somewhat discouraged, as if something just went wrong. I never heard any more about printing the items found at the Carnation property. Had this been part of a plan to convince me and others that Kurt had been to the Carnation property after leaving the rehab in Los Angeles? Did Courtney accidentally reveal her scheme by saying too much?"

On the ride back, Courtney talks to Seattle narcotics Detective Antonio Terry on his car phone. Grant later learns that Love had been talking to Terry quite a bit during the entire time Kurt was missing. Terry was also mentioned in the missing person report as having additional information about Kurt. Antonio Terry's name comes up again later.

Grant picks up the vibe that Courtney was still thinking more about herself than Kurt, and that she seemed to be obsessed with her career. He says: "While Courtney was out of the car at one time, I heard radio commentator, Paul Harvey, talk about a rumored suicide pact which supposedly existed between Courtney and Kurt. This was typical of the type of planted stories I'd heard Courtney originate on her own and then blame others for leaking to the press."

Grant wonders if there was a connection between Courtney's fake "overdose" on Saturday night (April 2nd), and the possible deliberate overdose and arrest on Thursday morning April 7th. "Had she expected Kurt to die Saturday night? Had she expected us to find his body Thursday morning? Had she tried to make this look like a suicide pact?".

They arrive back at the Lake Washington home, where Grant tells Courtney that he'd like to talk to Michael "Cali" DeWitt and Dylan Carlson together. "Cali went to rehab in El Paso, or Georgia... no, he's in L.A. with friends". Courtney then shouts to Eric "Call Cali and tell him to get back up here on the next plane".

Grant takes Dylan into the kitchen to talk, and notices that his response to questions seemed "canned", as if he'd just been prepared and rehearsed. Grant stops the questioning since Dylan kept nodding off from a heroin fix.

At this point, Grant leaves the house but asks Eric to call him at the hotel he is staying at when Cali got there. Several hours later, Grant calls from his hotel room and speaks to Eric, who tells him that after he left, Courtney had him call Cali and tell him that he didn't have to come to Seattle. "I don't know what's going on here!" Eric says.

Why Courtney would do this, only she knows. It seemed like she obviously did not want DeWitt (the person many believe to be directly involved and the last person to see Kurt) to talk to Grant, thus obstructing his investigation.

On Saturday, April 16th, Grant and associate Ben Klugman go back to the Lake Washington house to talk to Courtney, but were informed by the woman that answered the door that Courtney was upstairs sleeping. When they ask to talk to Wendy O'Connor, who was also there, the woman returns a few minutes later. "Wendy says she has nothing to talk to you about" she says.

They leave to follow up on other leads and talk to the electrical supervisor who had found Kurt. "Kurt's hair looked like it had been combed by a hairdresser. It was all spread out nice and even." he says. Grant wants to see the police photographs to see what he's talking about.

Grant later learns that Courtney called the electrical contractors before he had agreed to fly to Seattle. She instructed them to work on the lights and motion detector on the greenhouse on April 6th. Grant thinks all this is a bit strange, and wonders if Courtney already knew that Kurt was inside, and was trying to get his body discovered.
