Was Kurt Cobain Murdered?
Het Nieuwsblad (Belgian Newspaper)
July 4th/5th 1998

Who killed Kurt Cobain? That's the title of a book written by two Canadian journalists. According to them the Nirvana singer didn't commit suicide, but was killed. The British filmmaker Nick Broomfield also points in that direction in his documentary Kurt & Courtney, that recently was released in Europe. The Canadians are certain, the Brit has serious doubts, both have questions about the responsibility of widow Courtney Love. Doubts and questions. Read on and you will have them too. By Sander VAN DEN BROECKE.

Kurt Cobain was found dead above the garage of his home in Seattle on Friday April, 8 1994. He had shot himself in the mouth wit a Remington-gun. He had been dead for at least two days. Next to his body a farewell letter. Suicide.

Off course suicide. Because Courtney Love, Cobain's wife had hired a detective to locate her husband. Cobain fled a rehab centre and headed to Seattle. Love stayed at that time in Los Angeles and was worried. "He is armed and suicidal" she said to the private detective, friends and the police. No doubt about it that is was suicide. After all it was Kurt Cobain we were dealing with. The man who a couple of weeks before in Rome poisoned himself almost lethally with pills and champagne, a notorious heroin user who talked about having suicide attempts in interviews, who wrote songs where suicide was often mentioned. No wonder the police, who send a murder investigation unit to the Cobain's house just to be sure, concluded that Cobain had shot himself to death.

That same day some people started to have some doubts. First of all Tom Grant, the private investigator that was hired by Courtney to track down Cobain. But also Robert Lee, a journalist with a TV-show in Seattle started asking himself some questions. Five days after the body was discovered he presented his first TV-show that was titled: Kurt Cobain was murdered. There would be many more. Alas, because nobody took the eccentric, egocentric, Lee seriously.

Some did believe Tom Grant, for example Ian Halperin and Max Wallace, the two Canadian journalists who now, four years later, published a book about the case. You can find some information on the internet: Grant has a website and so does Toby Armirault, writer of novels like Linus Welsh and Things my mother said II. All those people come to similar conclusions and asked themselves questions about the same facts. We will go over them for you.

Kurt with Courtney Love and baby Frances. They found 1.52mg/l morphine in the singer's blood. A lethal dose according to the specialists. They doubt the fact that he was capable of shooting himself in the head.

Heroin
Next to Cobain's body they found a cigar box, containing a needle, spoon and a string to tie off. He had been using heroine. On both arms, his sleeves were down and buttoned up, they found recent needle stings. Kurt was high when he killed himself told the press. When the autopsy took place they found 1.52mg morphine per litre in Cobain's blood. Heroin changes into morphine when it enters our system. 1.52mg/l is a very high dose, everybody agrees on that. According to some experts, including some in Belgium, 0.5 mg/l in the blood of a very addicted person kills that person. Cobain had the triple amount in his blood system. Above all that they found Diazepam, related to valium, in his blood and that substance makes the effect of heroin even worse.

So with that lethal dose in his body, Kurt still had the time and the clarity of mind to put away his heroin material in the cigar box, roll down at least one sleeve and button it up, take the gun and shoot himself in the mouth.

We timed it. Roll down a sleeve, button it up, put three spoons in a box and put a bottle of water in our mouth. We did it three times, never fast and every time we needed about 20sec to do it. And that's impossible, according to some experts. With that amount in your system you will become unconscious or dead within seconds. Sometimes victims of an OD die during injection and are found with the needle still sticking in their arm. They claim it is impossible that Kurt was capable of cleaning up and shooting himself. Others, like Jan Van Boxlslaer, professor Toxicology at the university of Ghent, do think it is possible. "Tolerance can be so different with every person that I don't dare to set a time to it." What does bother Van Boxslaer is the combination of heroin and a violent suicide. "Because it is such a contradiction, when you're high on heroin, you are happy, it doesn't make you violent at all. Almost every Heroin addict who wants to kill himself will choose to OD. There isn't one case known to me of a violent suicide in combination with heroin."

Credit Card
Kurt Cobain had a credit card. Courtney blocked it with an excuse when Cobain disappeared from the rehab enter on April the 1st. That way it was easier for private investigator Tom Grant to locate him, she thought. And: if he doesn't have any money he will come back anyway. The credit card was used. Without result, but every attempt was being registrated. The last registration of such an attempt dated from April, 8, a few hours before they found Kurt's body. According the autopsy rapport he had been dead then for at least two days. The card wasn't found in his wallet. Was it Cobain's murderer (if there was one) who tried to use the card? Not necessarily, Cobain could have lost the card somewhere or it could have been stolen. Even more strange is the fact that the credit card case was never fully investigated. No one can say what really happened.

Suicide Note
The suicide note that was found next to Kurt's body (with the pen push through it) is a strange piece of literature The entire letter Kurt talks in mysterious phrases about how he isn't capable of enjoying the success and his music. He writes that he feels that he should have a punch-in time clock before he walks on stage and says that he is sorry about that, he admits that he needs to sedate himself to feel good on a stage. In short the entire letter looks like a farewell to music. It was said Cobain had been planning that goodbye for a long time. He was tired of his life as a rock god and wanted to retire. Only the four last lines of the letter are a real goodbye. "Please keep going Courtney, for Frances For her life, which will be so much happier without me. I love you, I love you." And exactly those last lines are written in a different handwriting than the rest of the letter. That is possible off course. Handwriting experts say that for instance the k's in the letter don't match to each other, but that isn't proof. There are many people (including the author of this article) who write certain letters in different ways. That the ending of the letter was written larger than the rest of the letter is also possible: the most important part is clearly visible. Some people do think that the letter is fake: because it contains two very different (form and content) pieces.

Fingerprints
They didn't find any legible fingerprints on the gun (that Kurt bought just a couple of days before), nor on the two shotguns shells that were still in the gun, nor on the pen with which he wrote the so called suicide note. Curious, say the people who believe the murder theory. Not at all curious, say the people of the murder investigation unit of the federal police of Brussels. "It is common that we don't find any legible fingerprints on objects like that." But the gun does contain the fingerprints of two different people. That is possible as well. Kurt bought it together with his best friend Dylan Carlson the day before he went to the rehab centre.

Eldon Hoke
Eldon Hoke, also known as El Duce, was a punk, singer of a The Mentors and a hopeless alcoholic. He claimed Courtney Love had asked him in Hollywood to "blow Cobain's head off" for 1.5 million Belgian franks. He repeated that statement to the police and was tested by a lie detector.

According to Edward Gelb, the expert who also checked OJ Simpson's statements, Eldon Hoke didn't lie. Hoke also told his story in front of Nick Broomfield's camera. Eight days later Hoke was dead. Run over by a train. Very suspicious, say his friends. Because Hoke was companied by somebody they had never seen before en who they never saw again afterwards. But, Hoke was an alcoholic and everyone who bought him a drink was a friend.

Courtney Love
The responsible for the murder is according to everybody who didn't believe the suicide theory Courtney Love. The motives were there and they all had to do with money. Cobain's estate is estimated at almost a billion Belgian francs. Shortly before he died Kurt changed his will, this is confirmed by Love's lawyer. According to some he didn't conclude Courtney in the new will. He also wanted to divorce her, that is also confirmed by the lawyer. Above all that he just cancelled the Lollapalooza-tour. That way he lost the 250 million Belgian francs, something Love, always greedy for money was furious about. But motives don't make you a suspect.

Suspicious is:

  • that Courtney Love stayed in Los Angeles and didn't look for Kurt in Seattle herself. She said she had some business to attend to in L.A. but that wasn't true.
  • that Courtney Love said to the police that her husband was missing, that he was armed and suicidal. That the police immediately concluded Kurt had killed himself is obvious: they were slightly brainwashed. Strange is that Love told the police that Cobain was last seen at the rehab centre while their friend and servant at their home in Seattle told her he had been there.
  • that Courtney Love the day before Kurt's body was found (at that time Cobain has been dead for a day already) told Dylan Carlson, a good friend of Cobain, that he and private investigator Tom Grant really need to take a look in the room above the garage. Dylan Carlson doesn't do that, because he knew what he was going to find, according to Grant.
  • that Courtney Love claimed there was a second suicide note addressed directly to her. She found it beneath her pillow in their house in Seattle. Private investigator Tom Grant says this is impossible. When he went through the house the day before Kurt was found, looking for heroine and other things he looked under the pillow. There was nothing there.
  • that Courtney Love threatened to sue a lot of people who talk a lot about the murder theory, but didn't actually brought someone to court.
